Do You or Your Student Need Help With Math?
Are You Falling Behind In Your Mathematics and Science Classes?
Are You Getting Bad or Failing Grades In Math?
Often I find that students need additional help and their teachers don’t have the extra time to dedicate to students struggling with math. In today’s society the need for an understanding of mathematics is a key for success not only in educational endeavors but also in the working world.
This Is What I Do To Help You or Your Student!
When students come to me for help, our sessions together consist of at least one of the following three things:
- Reviewing or introducing new concepts: The great thing about math is that a student’s understanding can be constructed using the knowledge that he or she already has. In that regard, what I am able to do is bring up a topic with which the student should already be familiar and simply add to it. I walk the student through sample problems as I am explaining the topics at hand, occasionally stopping to ask if he or she has an idea what to do next. Once I am done explaining something, I ask if he or she has any questions, and then provide problems of my own to try. Of course, the student I am helping needs to be willing to learn and work on the material, but persistence does not go unrewarded. When I see for myself how a student works on a problem, I see into his or her thinking process, which makes it much easier for me to explain the topic in a way that is relevant.
- Homework help: Sometimes the student might have a grasp on what’s going on in the classroom, but he or she may have trouble applying those ideas to homework problems. Students often need to use some creativity and that alone can be intimidating, so I walk through similar sample problems with them. What I do first is ask what I already know and what I need to know, and as I actually do the problem I point out important things to watch out for when doing them. Once the student feels comfortable with the sample problem, I let him or her do the actual homework and allow him or her to ask me questions along the way.
- Studying for quizzes and tests: The process I use to help a student study for a test is similar to that used for building concepts, but in this situation I let the student have more control over the session so he or she can ask questions and tell me what he or she is comfortable doing and what needs work. Sometimes students wants me to reinforce concepts they already learned and provide practice problems, and sometimes they just want to work on a set of review problems and have me there to help when necessary. When I help review for a test or a quiz, I want to make sure that the student is familiar enough with every possible topic so that there will be no surprises on tests. If the teacher asks tricky questions on quizzes and tests that don’t normally show up on homework, I help the student know what to look for in a problem so that the test problems themselves become less intimidating.
